Palo Alto Airport (KPAO) is an incredible jumping-off point for some of the best fly-in camping in the Western United States. Whether you're looking for a quick coastal overnight or a rugged mountain getaway, there are numerous destinations within a short flight that offer the unique experience of pitching a tent right next to your airplane.

Here are some of our favorite airport camping spots near Palo Alto:
Half Moon Bay (KHAF)
Just a short hop over the hill, Half Moon Bay Airport offers a convenient coastal escape. While it's very close to KPAO, it's a world away in terms of atmosphere. It's a great spot for a "shakedown" trip to test your gear before heading further afield.
Oceano (L52)
Located right on the Central Coast, Oceano Airport is a legendary destination for fly-in campers. The campground is located right on the field, and it's just a short walk to the beach and local restaurants. It's one of the few places where you can fall asleep to the sound of the Pacific Ocean while tucked under the wing.
Columbia (O22)
Stepping into Columbia Airport feels like stepping back into the Gold Rush era. The airport features a dedicated grass tie-down and camping area with fire pits and showers. A short walk takes you directly into Columbia State Historic Park, a preserved 1850s mining town.
Shelter Cove (0Q5)
For a more remote coastal experience, head north to Shelter Cove Airport. This "Lost Coast" destination features a runway perched on a cliff over the ocean. You can camp at the nearby campground and enjoy some of the most dramatic coastal scenery in California.
Kern Valley (L05)
Nestled in the southern Sierra Nevada, Kern Valley Airport is a favorite for those who love river activities. The "Airport Cafe" on the field is famous for its food, and the Kern River is just a short walk away, offering rafting and fishing opportunities.
Furnace Creek (L06)
If you're looking for a desert adventure, Furnace Creek Airport in Death Valley National Park is at 210 feet below sea level. You can camp at the Furnace Creek Campground nearby. This is a winter destination—avoid it in the summer when temperatures are extreme!
Georgetown (E36)
Located in the Sierra foothills, Georgetown Airport offers a peaceful, wooded camping experience. It's a great spot for hiking and enjoying the fresh mountain air, with excellent facilities maintained by a dedicated group of local pilots.
Catalina (KAVX)
The "Airport in the Sky" at Catalina Island is a bucket-list destination for many pilots. While you camp at designated sites on the island rather than right on the tarmac, the flight over the channel and the stunning island views make it a truly unique fly-in camping experience.
No matter which destination you choose, fly-in camping is a fantastic way to utilize your pilot's license and see the West from a whole new perspective. Blue skies and happy camping!
